Hi, my name is Linda Cooper, this is my Uniquely Your Designs website blog.
I have other websites and blogs too, some are listed in the menu.
I started crafting at a young age with my grandmother trying to teach me to knit. It did not work out well as I expected it to grow faster.
When I was 10 we moved house and rented a place that still had quite a few things belonging to the owners.
I came across a small booklet with detailed step by step pictures of crochet stitches. I tried it and bit by bit taught myself and from that moment I was hooked.
I would make dolls blankets when I got hold of any wool, which wasn't often.
As a teenager I got a Saturday job in a hairdressers and became an apprentice on leaving school.
Each January it was quiet and all the girls would bring in knitting to fill the spare time. So I got some wool, a pattern and knitting needles and did some too.
By this time I had met my future husband and intended to make him a jumper. It took 18 months and wasn't a brilliant shape.
A wedding, a house and a few job changes later we were expanding our family. Out came the needles for baby clothes and the crochet hook for a shawl.
I made many things for my home, especially after I got a knitting machine. I learned to design basic clothes for the children and made jumpers for us and as gifts.
Life got busier with a growing family and it was all put aside.
I read more than I ever had, devouring books at a great rate, becoming interested in spiritual subjects, along with yoga and meditation.
Crochet was picked up occasionally from time to time but mostly lay untouched until grandchildren began to appear.
But then the universe in its wisdom decided I wasn't doing what I was meant to be doing and decided to stop me in my tracks.
3 illnesses at once for just over 2 years was a very effective way of doing just that. I couldn,t read because my eyes were badly affected. I was able to watch TV for no more than 15 minutes and the same for using the computer, also took hours before I could go back to either one.
I have never been one to sit and do nothing and there is only so much meditation you can do. So out came the trusty hooks and yarn. I didn't have to focus, I could crochet blankets by touch alone.
But as I improved I wanted variation and began making hats, scarves and fingerless mitts.
Of course the few items grew into piles and kept growing.
Once I was recovered I had an amazing idea, I could set up a shop and sell online. It would be simple to do. Right?
I had absolutely no idea what I was letting myself in for. Just the initial set up was a challenge by itself. I needed photos, descriptions and more. But I did it. Joined the site forum, talked to others and realised that I had barely started.
It was a very steep learning curve but I kept going. Once the first sale came, I was hooked. I walked on air for days.
As businesses do, it grew and changed as I explored different avenues. The longer I did it, the more I wanted it to be my sole occupation. For that though, it had to be able to pay me a wage.
I worked hard to find something that I could create, that would be different, personal and would be great for all ages.
And so word art came into being about 6 years ago. I have enjoyed every minute of creating word art but due to other commitments and time constraints I cannot do as much of it anymore.
Now I have become an Affiliate marketer and an Influencer. I love new challenges and this is a major new challenge. It fits well with my lifestyle now, keeping up with family as we spread out. My work can be done anywhere and word art posting is planned to fit around my many days away each month.
It has taken a lot of hard work over the years, building social media and learning all I needed for each stage of my journey. Now I understand that learning never ends, that hopefully I will always seek new challenges and that life is more interesting when you are curious and have a thirst for knowledge.
I have also learned that you are never too old to start something new and that behaving like a kid, at times, is good for you too!!
